Homecare in Mankato MN: Better Joint Health

As people get older, they tend to experience more pain in their joints. This is mostly caused by the wear and tear of their joints. The good news is there are some ways that you can help your elderly loved one to have better joint health. There are certain things that they can do to prevent as much wear and tear and damage to their joints.

Proper Exercises

There are some exercises that can help your elderly loved one to prevent as much wear and tear on their joints. It is important that your elderly loved one walks regularly, stretches on a daily basis, and practices yoga. Each one fo these exercises is not only going to help protect your elderly loved one’s joints, but they are going to help them feel better on a daily basis, as well.

Maintaining a Healthy Weight

Your elderly loved one should also maintain a healthy weight if they want to protect their joints. Being overweight, even by 5 to 10 lbs, can cause a lot of pressure and stress on many of the body’s joints. If your elderly loved one needs to lose weight, have them start eating healthier and exercising regularly. Together these two things will help your elderly loved one to not only lose weight, but to improve their quality of life overall, as well.

Medication Reviews

It is also important to make sure none of your elderly loved one’s medications are causing them to become dizzy or lightheaded. If they are experiencing these side effects from their medications, they would have a higher risk of falling and injuring their joints. If your elderly loved one is having these side effects, have their senior care provider take them to their doctor. Make sure the doctor is told about these side effects and see if they can change to a medication that doesn’t cause dizzy and lightheadedness. If the medications can’t be changed, it might be a good idea if your elderly loved one had a senior care provider with them most days and nights to help them get around when they are experiencing these side effects.

If your elderly loved one isn’t quite following the preventative tips that you have set into place for them, you can remind them what will likely happen if they don’t do these things. They will likely develop at least one form of arthritis which can lead to chronic pain and discomfort. Millions of Americans already suffer from arthritis. While there are pain medications to help, these don’t always work and they can cause further health issues, too.
