Are You Having Trouble Setting Realistic Goals for Caregiving?

When your goals aren’t realistic, then your plan for each day and your to do list aren’t going to be realistic, either. That’s where you can really get into trouble as a family caregiver.

Senior Care in Mankato MN: Setting Realistic Goals

Really Accept What You Can and Can’t Do.

It can be difficult to be honest, even with yourself, about what you can and can’t get done every day. Ideally, you want to get to everything on your list, including taking time for yourself, eating right, and getting enough sleep, right? But there are only so many hours in the day so you need to look at what you’re not getting to and why it’s so difficult.

What Are Your Priorities?

Understanding your priorities can help you to determine why you’re not getting certain tasks done. For example, your big priority may be managing your senior’s meals, making sure she’s comfortable, and handling paperwork for her. That may not leave a lot of time for housework, running errands, or even you.

Sort Your Priorities.

Once you understand your priorities, you can start to sort them. You can try ranking those using numbers or even letters, but it’s important that you understand which ones are your highest priority. Don’t forget that you need to be high on your priority list, even if that doesn’t feel right to you just yet.

Set up a Plan of Action and then Work the Plan.

Your lowest priority items still need to get done, or they’ll become urgent. The key to that dilemma is to set up a plan of action that enables you to delegate and reassign those tasks to someone else. You may want to hire senior care providers to help with housework, for example, or to spend time with your aging adult while you take care of paperwork concerns. Other family members may be able to step in, too. You need to formulate the plan, but you also need to stick with it so that you have the time and energy you need for your higher priority items.

As your senior’s needs change, you may need to revisit this process. You may find that this process gets easier the more you go through the steps.
