Like many other things, sense of taste declines as people age. The reasons can be dry mouth, a loss of smell, and fewer taste buds.

The most common causes of taste disorders are:

●      Infections

●      Head injuries

●      Dental problems

●      Dry mouth

●      Heavy smoking

●      Antibiotics

●      Gum disease

●      Vitamin deficiencies

●      Bell’s palsy, and Sjogren’s syndrome

Here are some things you can do to make meals more enjoyable for you elderly loved one:

●       Rule out medical conditions. Check with your loved one’s doctors to see if there is a medical reason affecting your loved one’s ability to taste.

●       Make eating an event. Eating with friends and family can help.

●       Make foods hotter or colder. Eating food at its normal temperature makes it taste better. For example, food that is supposed to be hot tastes better when it actually is hot, and food that is supposed to be served cold tastes better when it is cold.

●       Add more herbs and spices to increase the flavor of your loved one’s food.

●       Try something new to excite your loved one’s palette. So try new recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner and see how much it makes a difference. Banana-nut oatmeal, English-Muffin Egg Pizzas, and baked eggs in a basket are some good options.

●       Savor the meal and encourage them to eat it during their favorite time of day.

When you cannot taste or smell, it makes mealtime less enjoyable. Finding new twists on your loved one’s meals can break the monotony of your loved one’s eating routine while adding needed nutrients into their diet.
